UNESCO, in collaboration with the African Union of Broadcasting, organised specialised training for Portuguese-speaking journalists and media regulators from African Small Island Developing States from 30 July to 1 August 2025.

The course responds to the growing need for specialised journalism able to provide accurate and responsible coverage of climate change, especially in island states highly exposed to floods, cyclones and sea-level rise.

The programme aims to equip journalists and regulators with practical and technical skills to improve public information and support decision-makers during climate and disaster emergencies.

Training themes include understanding climate phenomena, disaster reporting techniques, modern media tools, combating misinformation during climate crises and integrating gender-sensitive approaches into environmental coverage.

The initiative reflects AUB’s commitment to linguistic diversity and to strengthening journalists from different cultural and language backgrounds so they can produce responsible environmental journalism across Africa.
